Tags

Fine-grained labels for targeting specific subscribers.

What are tags?

Tags are labels you attach to individual subscribers: their interests, how engaged they are, where they signed up. Use them to send targeted emails to specific segments of your audience.

A subscriber might have all three of these tags. When you launch a design course, you send only to people tagged design instead of blasting everyone.

Creating tags

Open your publication and go to the Subscribers tab, then click Manage Tags. Click New Tag to create one—pick a name and color. You can also create tags on the fly when adding them to a subscriber.

Keep names lowercase and hyphenated (product-updates not Product Updates). Use similar colors for related tags so they're easy to scan.

Tagging subscribers

Click Add tags on any subscriber row. For bulk tagging, select multiple subscribers with the checkboxes, then click Manage Tags in the action bar that appears.

You can also tag subscribers automatically when they sign up. See auto-tagging in the Widget docs.

Sending to tagged subscribers

In the Send tab of any newsletter, expand Tag Filtering. Pick the tags you want to target.

Two filter modes:

  • Any — subscriber has at least one of the selected tags
  • All — subscriber has every selected tag

Keep it simple

Five meaningful tags beats fifty unused ones. Start with just a couple—maybe engaged and one interest-based tag—and add more as you actually need them.
